The River "S" Unit of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge has a 4.2 mile auto tour route and 1.5 mile seasonal hiking trail. The auto tour is an excellent way to see the Refuge. A pair of binoculars is a must and a camera makes it even more fun !!!
A nice spring day !!!!! ... with the help of Refuge personnel two more "first birds" were pointed out to me -- the Canvasback and the Eared Grebe ... while the resulting images are a bit fuzzy -- shot way across Rest Lake -- they do show the two species. While I was photographing those two birds, a third "first" bird -- the Caspian Term -- flew over the lake !!!!!!!
This trip includes ...
Great Blue Heron ... Pied-billed Grebe (with chicks) ... Savannah Sparrow ... Song Sparrow ... Marsh Wren ... Wilson's Snipe ... Cedar Waxwing ... Barn Swallow ... Bald Eagle ...
Caspian Tern ... Canvasback ... Eared Grebe ... Canada Thistle ...

View Across Rest Lake ...
Canvasback, Eared Grebes, and a Caspian Tern ...
|
|
My photographic equipment isn't quite powerful enough to shoot quality images across Rest Lake, however there were two species of birds - the Canvasback and Eared Grebes - which I hadn't seen before. Refuge personnel pointed them out to me and even let me climb on their truck for a better view. While I was shooting a Caspian Tern flew across the scene.
